Questions to ask your doctor
Being treated for cancer can be very difficult and overwhelming, so don’t hesitate to ask your doctor where you can find support to help you through this challenging time.
Here are some questions you can ask your doctor:
- What help can I get during my treatment?
- Are there any support groups I can join?
- Can you recommend someone to talk to, like a counsellor or therapist?
- Is there a nurse or care coordinator who can answer my questions?
- Are there any resources to help my family understand what I’m going through?
- How can I manage my emotions during treatment?
- Can you help me find a nutritionist or dietitian for my health while I’m being treated?
- Are there any websites or apps to track my symptoms or treatment?
- What should I do if I feel anxious or overwhelmed?
- How can I make sure I’m getting the support I need during treatment?
What should I talk to my doctor about after treatment?
If you had surgery, you'll have a follow-up appointment with your doctor after the surgery. During this visit, you'll talk about how the surgery went and your follow-up care plan. Ask for a schedule so you know when you'll need to see your doctor again.
It can help to write down any questions you have before the visit. Here are some examples of questions you might want to ask:
- Is the cancer gone?
- Do I need more treatment? What options are right for me?
- What are the chances of the cancer coming back?
- How will the treatment and cancer affect my life?
- What tests do I need before future visits?
