Open / laparoscopic / robotic-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy for BPE

This surgery is used to remove the enlarged part of the prostate when it is very large (usually over 80 mL, about four times the size of a healthy prostate).

About the surgery

Traditionally, this was done as open surgery, with a cut in the lower abdomen. In recent years, minimally invasive techniques - laparoscopic and robotic-assisted prostatectomy - have been introduced. These use small cuts and long instruments to remove the prostate, reproducing the open approach but in a less invasive way, which can help recovery and reduce complications.

This surgery is usually recommended only when other treatments haven’t worked or the prostate is very large.
